How does Cryoablation Work?
Cryoablation uses ultra-cold temperatures to freeze and destroy tumors. Typically, the entire process generally takes about an hour under local anesthesia or light sedation, allowing patients to quickly resume their daily lives.
- A thin cryoprobe, resembling a needle, is inserted into the targeted tissue with the guidance of ultrasound imaging or CT
- Liquid nitrogen, at ultra-cold temperatures, flows through the cryoprobe in a closed loop system, creating an ice ball to form around the tumor. A freeze-thaw-freeze cycle is performed to ensure thorough tumor destruction
- Once the final thaw step is completed, the cryoprobe is removed, and a small incision is covered with a steri-strip or band-aid. Over time, the body naturally eliminates the necrotic debris left behind from the destroyed tumor
